Here at Square Roots towers, we are delighted to welcome back, by very popular demand, the incredible award winning singer / songwriter Kirsten Adamson and her band The Tanagers to the beautiful and historic Square Tower. Kirsten and her band were stunning in 2024 when they played here last to a sell out crowd, so as always, we’d recommend you grabbing your tickets for this quickly.
Kirsten summons the same heart-stopping purity as Sandy Denny, by way of Emmylou Harris and Kate Bush. Transcendence runs in the family. Her father was Stuart Adamson (Skids, Big Country) and her mother Alexandra, a champion Highland dancer.
“With her captivating voice and kind-hearted spirit, there are definite similarities to country icon Emmylou Harris!” (Daily Express)
With summers spent soaking up the atmosphere in Nashville with her dad and a string of leading roles in musical theatre back in the UK, the teenage Adamson’s course was set. She sang backing vocals on Big Country’s last album Driving to Damascus at age 13. By 2010, she was forging her own career as a vocalist and keyboard player for indie-folkers Aberfeldy. She fronted country rockers The Gillyflowers and more recently shone as half of alt-country duo The Marriage, and then on a self-titled solo debut. The austere beauty of her voice has been a constant motif.
Her second solo album Landing Place (2023) is a glorious powerhouse of emotionally charged, beautifully delivered songs that bustles and glistens with echoes of folk rock and country gems. It was launched at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, an official showcase at London’s UK Americana Music Festival 2023 and a sold out UK tour in April. Adamson’s track My Father’s Songs has recently been nominated for an Americana UK Award for UK Song Of The Year 2024.
“Exceptionally good – one to appreciate for many years to come!” (Americana UK)
Adamson and her band The Tanagers are currently recording the followup album to Landing Place, Dreamviewer with award-winning producer/multi-instrumentalist Joe Harvey-Whyte at his London studio, Karma. Having impressed audiences and critics at festivals this summer including The British Country Music Festival in Blackpool’s prestigious Winter Gardens, Moseley Folk festival, Fringe By The Sea, Outwith festival and the Edinburgh International Festival, 2025/26 is set to be the time Adamson and The Tanagers create some big waves.
