“The Coal Porters whisk together a hugely listenable cocktail of bluegrass, folk and country..” (Uncut Magazine)
After a 4 year hiatus, we’re delighted to welcome the inimitable Sid Griffin and The Coal Porters back to Portsmouth and the beautiful Square Tower – and what’s more it’s their original 5 piece line up!
The Coal Porters claim to be the world’s first “alt-bluegrass” act, demonstrating the power of fiddle mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar and doghouse bass when matched with four-part harmonies and memorable melodies. After a four-year hiatus, The Coal Porters have reunited, led by Americana Music Association Award Lifetime Achievement Award winner Sid Griffin, whose band The Long Ryders are credited as progenitors of “alt-country”. Featuring on fiddle Grammy winner and Adele string section leader Kerenza Peacock.
Their sound has featured on NPR’s Morning Edition in the USA, live sessions for Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2 and Marc Riley for Radio 6 Music, and appearances at Glastonbury, SXSW and MerleFest.
“Swell picking, sweet vocals, strong tunes…a bucketful of tradition!” (Time Out)
The Coal Porters are: Karenza Peacock (fiddle and vocals), Paul Fitzgerald (banjo & vocals), Sid Griffin (vocals, mandolin, harmonica and autoharp), Andrew Stafford (bass), Neil Robert Herd (guitar & vocals).
